Destiny is one of the most talked about games of 2014. Set to be released later this year, it will bring PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners a new first-person shooter from the makers of Halo. Here, we bring you all of the release date information you need to know, as well as gameplay features, trailers and screenshots. See also: PS4 vs PS3 comparison review

Destiny release date: When is Destiny coming out?

First things first, let's talk about when you'll actually be able to play Destiny. If you've pre-ordered the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3 versions of the game, you'll actually be able to begin playing the Destiny beta from today (17 July). For Xbox One and Xbox 360 pre-order customers, the doors to the beta will open slightly later, on 23 July.

For those of you in the UK who haven't pre-ordered the game and aren't planning to, there's another way for you to get hands-on with the game. 27 Game stores across the country will be hosting Destiny lock-ins from today until 24 July, opening for an additional two hours on their dedicated lock-in days to give gamers a chance to try it. You can find out when your local store is hosting a Destiny lock-in here.

That's ahead of the actual release of the game, which is set for 9 September this year on all platforms, so there's not too long to wait.

Also on 9 September, Destiny will be available as part of a special white PlayStation 4 bundle, which is rather nice.

Destiny pre-orders

That aforementioned white PlayStation 4 with Destiny bundle is available to pre-order now exclusively from Game, and will cost you £384.99.

If it's just the game you're after, you can pre-order the download from the Sony Entertainment Network Store. It's £54.99 for PS4 or £49.99 for PS3. If you want access to the beta version, you'll need to register with Bungie.net and sign in with your PSN ID.

You'll get access to the beta if you pre-order a physical copy too. You can do so from various places, including Amazon. It's £45 for the PS4 and Xbox One version on Amazon or £40 for the older consoles.

Amazon also offers a (rather pricey) limited edition version of Destiny. It's only for PS4 and cost you £80.00. The Limited Edition comes with a SteekBook case and an 'Arms and Armaments' field guide, as well as postcards from the Golden Age and antique star chart collector's items. It also includes the Destiny Expansion Pass for access to extra content such as story missions, arenas, weapons, armour and gear.

At Game, you'll find an even more expensive Destiny Ghost Edition, ideal for collectors. It comes with all of the extras found in the Limited Edition mentioned above, in addition to a Ghost Replica, a Letter of Introduction, Golden Age Relics and a Guardian Folio to keep all of the extra bits in one place.

Ghost Edition is available for Xbox One or PS4 for £149.99. Watch the video below to see a closer look at what you'll get from the Destiny Ghost Edition.

Destiny gameplay features

Destiny is made by Bungie, the creators of the popular Halo series, and is published by Call of Duty's Activition. It was first announced by Bungie in November 2012 after details of the game including concept art and plot details were leaked. It's thought that the first reference for the game was actually hidden within Halo 3: ODST in 2009, though, which actually features a sign that reads "Destiny Awaits."

It's thought that Destiny is the most expensive video game every made, with a budget that could be as high as $500 million (almost £300 million), so that should give you some idea of how awesome this game could be.

Destiny is an online multi-player first-person shooter like both Call of Duty and Halo, and is set 700 years into the future in a post-apocalyptic solar system that Earth's inhabitants had once colonised within. Players take control of a powerful Guardian of the last city left on Earth, and will explore the ruins of our solar system's familiar planets to defeat Earth's enemies.

"The next evolution of the first-person action genre that provides an unprecedented combination of storytelling, cooperative, competitive and public gameplay, and personal activities that are all seamlessly woven into an expansive, persistent online world," reads the Destiny website. "Venture out alone or join up with friends. The choice is yours."

There are various game modes to choose from. In Crucible mode, you'll compete against other players, while in Explore mode you can revisit worlds you've discovered to collect resources to help you improve your weapons and gear.

Strike mode sees players co-operate with one another to confront common enemies, Tower mode lets players socialise with other players in a third-person social space, and Story mode lets players journey through the cinematic story at the centre of the game.
