Microsoft is apparently bringing folder support to Windows Phone 8.1, at least according to a that briefly appeared on the company's Website.
The document, which was , describes how users can create a folder by dragging one Live Tile on top of another. Users can then add a name to the folder and drag more tiles in and out. It sounds exactly like the way folders work on iOS and Android.
Although Nokia phones technically gained folder support earlier this year, it's a workaround. It requires a , and you must open the app to create and sort each list of shortcuts.
Adding native folder support is just one other way Microsoft is trying to bring Windows Phone up to feature parity with Android and iOS. , which is officially coming this summer (but is fairly ), added several features to that end, including the () , the gesture-based “Word Flow” keyboard and the drop-down Action Center for quick access to notifications and settings. After spending some quality time with Windows Phone 8.1 recently, I'm not sure that folders are an essential feature. There's something nice about not having to dig into folders to find what you need, and Windows Phone's resizeable Tiles already go a long way toward maintaining a compact the Start screen.
Still, there's nothing wrong with giving users an option to add folders—assuming Microsoft truly is planning to do so. The Verge claims that this feature could arrive in July or early August.
